Why is the City of Oaks Marathon going virtual?

Following the cancellation of events through October 31 by the Raleigh City Council, we made the decision to operate as a virtual race. The City of Raleigh and the entire City of Oaks Marathon team want you to stay well, and we’re not confident that it will be safe to host large crowds in the fall due to COVID-19.

What is a virtual race?

A virtual race means that you can run on your own time and wherever is convenient for you. You’ll also receive all the swag and the bragging rights that come along with participating in Raleigh’s Hometown Race!

What swag will I get in the virtual edition?

As if the swag couldn’t get better than last year – we UPGRADED! You’ll receive the exclusive finisher hoodie, spinning finisher medal and over $10,000 of savings with the Go Play Save Triangle mobile subscription.

How will I receive my Go Play Save mobile subscription?

At the conclusion of the race you will receive your mobile subscription link via email. This will have step-by-step instructions on how to activate your savings from your mobile device.

How do I get my swag?

You’ll receive your swag at the Finisher Swag Pick Up. We’re hosting an in-person two day pick up for all participants to receive their swag – Friday, November 13 and Saturday, November 14. Click here for more details and to reserve your time.

What do I need to bring to packet pick-up?

We ask that all of our participants know their DISTANCE and SWAG SIZE when picking up your swag. If you are picking up for another participant we ask that you please know their information and have a picture of their photo ID

When do I need to complete my run?

You’ll need to upload your time by November 14. The registration and results forms will close November 14 at 11:59 PM. Please make sure you get your results submitted by the deadline. Upload your results here. 

Can I change my distance?

We do not have an official change distance form for our virtual race. You will be able to select the distance you ran when uploading your results. So, if you’re registered for the full marathon, but want to go down to half marathon, you will be able to make that change when uploading results. 

More information on how to upload results will be available closer to November 1.

Do I need to register for the virtual race?

If you registered for the 2020 City of Oaks Marathon your registration for the 2020 event will be transferred to virtual.

New to Raleigh’s Hometown Race? You will need to register for the virtual race by clicking the ‘Register’ button above

Can I get a refund for my registration?

We are unable to refund your registration fee. We will be refunding the add-on purchase of the iTab engraving.

Though we are unable to refund your registration fee, you are able to request your entire registration back in the form of race credit instead of running the virtual race. The deadline to request race credit is August 2 at 11:59 PM

Do I have to run in the virtual race to get the swag?

Yes, only virtual race participants will receive the bib, medal, hoodie and access to all the GoPlay Triangle discounts. We will not be selling merchandise outside of the virtual race registration.

When does the virtual race start?

The virtual race will start November 1 and will run until November 14. You will have 14 full days to register, upload your results and embrace the hometown experience. Our registration and results forms will close on November 14 at 11:59 PM.

Will you ship any swag?

No, we will not be shipping any swag to any of our participants. Race staff are organizing a local finisher swag pick-up during results week, abiding by state and city health guidelines. Details to be provided at a later date.

Can a friend or family member pick up my swag?

Yes, we allow and strongly encourage family members and friends to pickup for each other. This way anyone out of town can receive their swag and we limit the amount of runners at each finisher swag pick-up. 

More details regarding the Finisher Swag Pick-Up will be available prior to November 1.

What do I do if I don’t want to run virtual?

The deadline to defer your registration has passed.

What is Worry Free Registration?

Our Worry Free Registration was made to make all of our participants feel secure in their registration with the 2020 City of Oaks Marathon. You can view more details about Worry Free Registration here.

Can I opt-out of the virtual race?

The deadline to defer your registration for race credit has passed.

How do I track my distance and time?

You can track your distance and time using a fitness watch, stopwatch or using an app on your phone – Strava, Under Armour, Google Fit or Apple Health.

What distance can I run?

There’s a distance for the entire family! You can run either the Marathon, Half Marathon, 10k, 5k or the 1 Mile Run. The choice is yours!

Can I run the Marathon Relay?

No, the Marathon Relay will not be a distance option for the Virtual Race. Anyone who originally registered for the Marathon Relay will be refunded within 10-15 business days. We encourage all participants in this distance to run the City of Oaks Marathon Virtual Race.

Where can I run?

You can run wherever. The beauty of a virtual race is you can create your own course, run on a treadmill, discover a new trail – the possibilities are endless.

Will there be age group or overall awards?

There will be no age group or overall awards for the virtual race.

How do I upload my results?

We will be accepting your official results anytime between November 1 – November 14. Click here to submit and view results!

Do I need to submit results to receive the swag?

We highly encourage all of our participants to upload their results, but as long as you are able to attend the finisher swag pick-up or have someone pick-up for you – you will receive the swag.

I received a refund. Am I still in the virtual race?

Yes, if you did not defer your registration you are still registered for the virtual race. The refund you received is for an add-on purchase for either – bib mailing, Breakers Bonus, VIP Upgrade or the iTab engraving.

We are refunding all add-on purchases for our 2020 participants. As long as you DID NOT defer your registration you are still registered for the virtual race.

I paid more than the refund I received. Where's the rest of my registration fee?

The refund you received is for an add-on purchases you made for either – bib delivery, Breakers Bonus, VIP Upgrade or iTab engraving. We are only able to refund add-on purchases not the registration amount.

When should I expect my add-on purchase refund?

We will be refunding add-on purchases like packet mailing, iTab engraving, VIP Upgrade and the Breakers Bonus. This refund will be processed within 5-10 business days.
